Search providers

Online databases have replaced stand-alone PC programs. The main providers are Ancestry and Find My Past. But there are a whole lot of other providers you can use. Read on for more details.

Ancestry
The main provider by far is Ancestry.com, covering two hundred countries and fifteen billion records. An annual membership will cost well over £100. There's no need to pay a membership if you live in England,. You have free access to Ancestry.com at your local library.

If you are searching for Scottish records, the best option is to use Scotland's People. Ancestry.com does include some Scottish records but isn't as complete as the Scotland's People website. Searching is free, but there is a charge of £7 for thirty credits, which will allow you to typically download five documents. If you live in Scotland you can buy starter and top up vouchers at a reduced price from your local library.

It's worth checking to see if the local history society for the area your family members lived in has a reduced cost or free access to records.
